Drawing on interviews with employees from foreign companies, the study examines the precariousness of working conditions, including low wages, excessive overtime, and a lack of adequate labor protections. The research highlights structural power imbalances, with multinational corporations (OEMs) exerting significant control over the supply chain, leading to intensified labor exploitation. The paper discusses the roles of employers, the state, and unions in addressing these challenges, emphasizing the need for improved industrial policies, enhanced workers’ rights, and better coordination between all stakeholders.
The policy relevance of this research is significant within the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), which advocates for the promotion of inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all. The study also aligns with key EU accession chapters, particularly Chapter 19 (Social Policy and Employment) and Chapter 20 (Enterprise and Industrial Policy), which focus on labor rights, social inclusion, and industrial development. The findings suggest that concerted action to address labor rights issues in global supply chains is essential for achieving both SDG targets and aligning with EU standards for labor conditions and economic development.
