 Description:

This report presents a comprehensive analysis of Serbia’s energy situation, emphasizing the need for energy independence and sustainability through a green transition and diversification of energy sources. It outlines the country’s current energy mix, heavily reliant on coal (over 70%) and hydroelectric power (around 25%), while renewable energy sources such as wind and solar remain underutilized. The study identifies key priorities for Serbia’s energy transition, including increasing the share of clean energy in electricity production, with a particular focus on geothermal and biomass resources, which are currently underexploited. Public opinion shows significant support for renewable energy, especially solar and wind, but highlights the challenge of the “Not in My Backyard” (NIMBY) effect, which may hinder local energy projects. The report stresses the importance of securing public support, investment, and legal frameworks to facilitate the green transition, as well as the need for local community involvement in the approval process of new energy initiatives. These findings have direct policy relevance, particularly in aligning Serbia’s energy policies with the EU’s green transition goals and the SDGs, and they provide crucial insights for improving public energy policy, fostering sustainability, and ensuring energy security as part of the European integration process.
